Background of the Study:
Diplomatic negotiations serve as critical mechanisms for de-escalating international crises and resolving conflicts. The summits between the United States and North Korea have garnered global attention as pivotal moments in managing nuclear tensions and fostering dialogue between adversarial states (Kim, 2023). These high-level negotiations involve complex interactions, including confidence-building measures, mutual concessions, and strategic communication, all aimed at reducing the risk of armed conflict. This study examines the processes and outcomes of US–North Korea summits to understand how diplomatic negotiations contribute to crisis defusion. It explores the negotiation dynamics, the role of intermediary channels, and the impact of public statements on international perceptions. By analyzing historical summit data, transcripts, and expert opinions, the research identifies key factors that have led to both successes and setbacks in the negotiation process (Lee, 2024). The study further assesses how these summits influence broader regional security and contribute to establishing long-term peace frameworks in a volatile geopolitical environment.
Statement of the problem:
Despite the high-profile nature of US–North Korea summits, their ability to produce lasting peace remains uncertain. Diplomatic negotiations have sometimes led to temporary de-escalation without resolving underlying issues, and the inconsistent follow-through on agreements poses significant challenges (Park, 2023). This study seeks to examine the effectiveness of these negotiations in defusing international crises and identify the factors that limit their success, providing insights for more sustainable conflict resolution.
Objectives of the Study:
To evaluate the role of diplomatic negotiations in defusing crises between the US and North Korea.
To analyze the factors that contribute to both successful and unsuccessful negotiation outcomes.
To propose strategies for enhancing the effectiveness of diplomatic negotiations in crisis situations.
Research questions:
How have US–North Korea summits contributed to crisis de-escalation?
What factors affect the success or failure of these diplomatic negotiations?
How can negotiation strategies be improved for more sustainable peace?
Significance of the Study:
This study is significant as it offers a critical assessment of diplomatic negotiations in high-stakes international crises. The findings will provide valuable insights for policymakers and negotiators in refining conflict resolution strategies, ultimately contributing to a more stable and secure global environment (Choi, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to the topic only.
